Last week we were discussing “The Law of Influence” which is the second law in John C. Maxwell’s great book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.”

This morning I want to talk about “The Law of Process” which I believe is a law that can help all of us to become better leaders. Because leadership develops daily—Not in a day!

I know that very few people here in the US follow the most popular sport in the world, which is Soccer. However, the “World Cup” tournament is being played right now in Germany and I think it is a great example to illustrate “The Law of Process.”

Let’s examine this statement: Champions don’t become champions in the ring—they are merely recognized there.

Whatever team wins the “World Cup” will have done it with a team of champions not just one person but through the collective efforts of many.

You may be asking yourself what does this have to do with leadership, so let me explain. Every player on each of the teams in the tournament has dedicated their life to becoming the best Soccer player they can possibly be. This is “The Law of Process” in action. Yes, I know that some of these great players are very gifted and blessed and some have not had to work as hard as others. One thing that I can assure you though is that even the most gifted of these superstars spend hours improving their skills.

The reason that “The Law of Process” is so important to these athletes, is because of the hours upon hours they spend honing their craft. This work ethic is something that we can all learn from, because the art of “Honing One’s Craft” is a very important key to success.

In an industry of attraction, we tend to attract the kind of people that we are, not the kind that we want.

Here’s a quote that I love: “As long as a man doesn’t know what he doesn’t know, he doesn’t grow.”

There are four phases of leadership growth that we all go through in our quest to become better leaders.

  • Phase 1—I don’t know what I don’t know. Therefore I don’t need to change.

  • Phase 2—I know what I don’t know. I take the appropriate steps to change.

  • Phase 3—I grow and know, it starts to show. I start to learn and other people take notice.

  • Phase 4—I simply go because of what I know. I start to do things more efficiently and effectively without even thinking about it.

As a person grows through these four phases they pass through four stages of development as well.

  • Stage 1—Unaware and Ineffective. There’s a word for this it’s called “Clueless.”

  • Stage 2—Aware and Ineffective. A person seeks to make changes to improve their life.

  • Stage 3—Aware and Effective. This is where we start to make a conscious effort to say and do the right things to be a more efficient and effective leader.

  • Stage 4—Unaware and Effective. At this point we do thing at the subconscious level without even thinking about it and they manifest themselves as success.

Benjamin Disraeli once said: “The secret of success in life, is for a man to be ready for his time when it comes.”

Remember, there is no such thing as an overnight success—To become a better leader—become a student of leadership and devote the time and resources in yourself to make it happen.

Start today by looking at yourself in the mirror and asking—What kind of leader do I what to be remembered as?

Take action and make it happen—Invest in yourself and remember that we are all the sum of the five people that most closely associate with.

The Law of Influence

Good morning Tom and Hello to our listening audience

Last week I started a segment on “Leadership” by talking about “The Law Of The Lid.”

This morning I want to talk about “The Law of Influence” which in my opinion is one of the most important laws of leadership! Because without “Influence” we can never—Let me say that again NEVER lead others.

Let me expand on last week’s example of the Manager, verses the Leader.

  • The manager is given a title which buys them some time to increase their level of influence with their people or erase that influence

  • A leader on the other hand uses his influence to grow and empower the people that willingly follow them

Colin Powell once stated “You have achieved excellence as a leader when people will follow you everywhere if only out of curiosity.”

Imagine how different things would be if the managers and leaders of every company received efficiency evaluations form the members of their team instead of just top down.

Believe it or not, that’s exactly why the network marketing industry is the perfect business model.

The leaders are identified buy the process of self-selection and elimination and they are empowered by willing followers because of there influence.

Within this past week there was a thread started on MLM.com that posed the question—
Who are your 5 Frontline Business Partners?

Rather than naming names one person chose to answer the question by describing five characteristics to select their top five people

  1. A communicator

  2. A trainer

  3. A systems developer

  4. Someone with courage and persistence

  5. Someone fun, and with a genuine desire to help others to succeed
With that in mind, I submit to you that a person needs to possess all of these virtues if they want to become a leader that people want to follow.

So how do we increase our influence over others to become a more efficient leader?

By becoming a student of virtues that build character and changing our circle of friends.

Remember that we are all the sum of the five people that most closely associate with.

Leadership is assumed, so step up and identify yourself; seek out an upline mentor and become a stronger leader.

The Law of the Lid

Good morning Tom—Thanks again for asking me to host this segment of the show

Each week, my plan is to give our listeners some valuable information that can be used to build their business.

We’ll be discussing the topics of Leadership, Training and The Psychology of Winning…along with some examples of how to put the subject matter into practical application.

You can also follow the show on my new Blog and you can find the Blog at

Feel free to post your comments and provide us with some feedback.

Okay—let’s get started…

John Maxwell is one of my favorite authors. He’s also considered to be one of the foremost authorities in the world on the subject of Leadership. He often starts his live conferences by discussing “The Law of the Lid” so I thought it only fitting to follow his lead and do the same thing.

Here are a few passages from Chapter One of John Maxwell’s famous book
“The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”

1. “Your leadership ability—for better or for worse—always determines your effectiveness and the potential impact on your organization.”

Now let’s stop and examine this principal for a minute…a person that is a stronger leader will be far more effective than someone that is a lesser leader.

The reason this is true—Is because Influence is the truest measure of leadership period.

Our fantastic industry is a classic example of just how true this is…for example, let’s look at the difference between a manager and a leader.

Ironically, a lot of people do not even understand that there is a difference…here is an example of what I’m talking about.

  • A manager is given their authority by the company or organization they work for

  • A leader on the other hand is empowered by the people that willingly follow them

2. “The higher you want to climb, the more you need leadership. The greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be.”

This is so important to everyone involved the network marketing industry—because network marketing is nothing more—than getting a large number of people, to duplicate a few simple tasks, consistently over time.

How can we expect to do that without becoming stronger leaders?

The important thing about “The Law of the Lid” is that everyone can raise his or her lid

Through personal development and mentoring we can all become stronger leaders.

Remember, leadership is assumed so step up and identify yourself; seek out an upline mentor that you want to work with and is willing to help you become a stronger leader.
